Every June, Loews Coronado Bay Resort, near San Diego, California plays host to the Dog Surfing Championships. Last year there were 60 canine competitors in three categories - small surfing dogs, large surfing dogs and combo surfing (dogs surfing with a human).


Each dog has three waves to impress the judges who are looking for confidence level, length of ride and overall ability to "grip it and rip it."


Some dogs try to earn extra points for style, with board shorts, sunglasses and even 4-legged wet suits being spotted on the competitors.
